Hawaii Inmate Attempts Escape From Federal Detention CenterHONOLULU, Hawaii -- One of the men who robbed a Kahala bank in Hawaii with Albert Batalona may have been trying to escape from prison at the same time Batalona did, KITV 4 News has learned.
Ever since they robbed American Savings Bank in Kahala in 1999, Sean Matsunaga and Batalona remained loyal. At Batalona's trial, Matsunaga added years to his own sentence by refusing to testify.
Matsunaga was prosecuted at federal court and sent to federal prison on the mainland, but for some reason he was back in Honolulu, Hawaii at the detention center in April. At the same time, Batalona and two others escaped from Halawa by digging through a prison wall. Apparently Matsunaga tried to do the same thing.
Matsunaga's attempt, apparently foiled by the detention center's concrete walls and reinforced steel, was discovered three days after Batalona was captured.
It's not clear if Matsunaga and Batalona were somehow communicating, or if Matsunaga just tried to dig out when he heard his friend was free. Afterward, Matsunaga's cellmate, drug defendant Clifford Mau, was locked in solitary confinement.
In a letter to the American Civil Liberties Union, his attorney said Mau "informed the investigating agents that he was unaware of any escape plan. It is Mr. Mau's suspicion that he is being segregated in a lockdown status as a means of coercing him into providing an incriminating statement against Mr. Matsunaga."
If convicted of attempted escape, Matsunaga would have five years added to the 20 years he's already serving. Drug Rehab by County
