Hawaii Takes Proactive Steps To Curb Meth CrisisOfficials in Hawaii are implementing several initiatives aimed at curbing the escalating use of methamphetamine throughout the state, the Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly reported Sept. 29.
Hawaii has the highest rate of methamphetamine misuse in the country. In addition, crystal methamphetamine, known as "ice," is attracting young adults from ages 21 to 35.
The efforts to combat the problem include a statewide summit, a legislative task force, several community forums and various grassroots efforts.
The Drug Control Strategy Summit, which was held Sept. 15-17, resulted in the development of cohesive strategies among law enforcement and federal, state and county officials.
"It was an excellent summit and a good turnout," said Lt. Gov. James Aiona Jr. "We drafted a strategy, bringing together all stakeholders under one roof to engage in dialogue and develop recommendations."
Summit recommendations included the establishment of a state drug czar, coordinated efforts for drug prevention, treatment, law enforcement and funding, and the addition of more inpatient and outpatient programs.
The Joint House-Senate Task Force on Ice and Drug Abatement is discussing drug interdiction efforts with state and federal law enforcement agencies. In addition, task force members have made site visits to treatment providers, medical professionals and families affected by the drug.
