Federal prison for former Hawaii coach

HONOLULU, HAWAII - A former part - time University of Hawaii - Hilo tennis coach convicted of growing marijuana plants in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison.
The sentence imposed Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Alan Kay includes Laron Kortgaard's conviction of violating supervised release.

Kortgaard, 46, was placed on eight years supervised released in January 2001 when he was released from prison after serving eight years of a 10 - year sentence for importing heroin into Hawaii.

Kortgaard was fired in April 2002, a month after his arrest. Because he was a part - time "casual - hire" in February 2001, the university didn't ask Kortgaard whether he had any prior convictions.

A federal court jury convicted Kortgaard in June 2002.

Kortgaard maintained his innocence at trial, saying he had merely stumbled upon a marijuana patch off Mauna Loa Road.

But rangers had placed the patch under surveillance in December 2001, and observed Kortgaard on numerous occasions before his arrest.

Hawaii authorities recovered 65 marijuana plants, with an estimated street value of $60,000, from the patch.
